FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Elmwood Village anchor retailer Urban Leisure and Luxury is closing its doors after 25 years of business.
BUFFALO, NY -- July 10, 2017 – After 25 years of business Urban Leisure and Luxury, an anchor retailer in the Elmwood Village, is closing its doors. Urban's owners are retiring from the retail game. Urban Surfer, Inc. opened in 1992 and grew rapidly to become a leader in the surf, skate and snowboard industry. In the 2000's Urban evolved into a cutting-edge fashion boutique, and today is a prominent Elmwood contemporary clothing retailer riding the Ray-Ban and designer sunglass wave with the largest selection of sunglasses in Buffalo.
The store was a driving force in the rebirth of what in the 90's was known as The Elmwood Strip. Urban's owners worked tirelessly cleaning up the Avenue and volunteered countless hours to the creation and development of the Elmwood Village Association (previously known as Forever Elmwood). “As business and property owners, Ward and Maureen Pinkel, have truly left their mark on Elmwood Avenue,” said Elmwood Village Association executive director, Ashley Smith. “The civic pride that Ward brings with him to work has been a driving force behind many volunteer activities and neighborhood improvements. He and Maureen’s presence on the strip will be incredibly missed.”
Urban will be missed, but the boutique/building owners, Edward (Aka Wardo) and Maureen Pinkel, vow to rent their current location to a quality tenant who will compliment Elmwood's evolution as they shift their focus from retail to their real estate company Metro Beach, Inc., which owns the building located at 736 Elmwood Ave. and several other rental properties in the city. On Tuesday July 11th, Urban Leisure will begin liquidating their inventory with a target closing date of August 27.
